Do not wait for them to tag them. Ask.

Search on Monday morning. People list furniture on Sunday evening after a weekend of cleaning out rooms and deciding to redecorate. By Monday morning, new listings are fresh and underpriced because sellers want things gone before the work week.

Search for “solid wood” rather than a specific item. Most people do not know the brand of their furniture. They do know it is heavy and real wood. Search “solid wood dresser,” “solid wood table,” “real wood desk.” Filter by “posted in the last 24 hours.”

Be ready to pick up immediately. The best deals are gone within hours. Have a truck or a friend with a truck lined up. If you ask them to hold it, someone else is already on their way.

Estate Sales and Auctions

Older furniture was built better. Solid hardwood joinery instead of staples. Real veneer over plywood instead of printed paper over particleboard. Estate sales — especially in older neighborhoods — are where you find heavy, well-built furniture for fifty dollars that would cost eight hundred new.

Go on the last day of the sale. Everything is half off or “make an offer.” The sellers want the house empty. They will negotiate. I bought a solid cherry wood dining table and six chairs for $200 on the last day of an estate sale. The set was probably $2,000 new.
