I used to do all my holiday shopping in a panicked two days in December, and my credit card statement told the whole story in January. One year I added up what I spent on gifts and almost fell over. It was more than my rent.

The fix was a system I stole from a friend who somehow stayed calm every December. It is boring, and it works.

Make the List in October

Before any shopping, write down everyone you plan to give a gift to. Every name. Then put a number next to each one: the exact amount you are willing to spend. Add the numbers. That total is your budget, and you set it before you see a single sale.

Set the Amounts in Stone

The mistake I always made was deciding budgets while standing in a store, where the numbers got very optimistic. Now the list lives on my phone and I do not deviate. If a gift comes in under budget, the difference rolls to the next person or back into savings.

Buy Through the Year, Not in December

I keep a shelf in the closet with a labeled box for each person. When I see something on sale in July that fits the person and the budget, I buy it and put it in the box. By December, most of the list is done, and the holiday season is about food and lights instead of mall crowds.

Track Every Dollar

The list app has a running total. When it hits the number, shopping stops, even if I see a great deal. That hard stop is what keeps the budget intact. It has saved me from more impulse buys than I can count.

Other things that helped:

• Suggesting a gift exchange or spending limit with friends and extended family
• Making food as gifts for neighbors and coworkers instead of store items
• Keeping a small cash envelope for last-minute host gifts

The first year with the system, I finished shopping by mid-November and spent about a third of what I used to. December me could not believe October me pulled it off.
