I bought a $1.25 phone charger at a dollar store once. It got warm in a way that electronics should never get warm. That was the day I learned the difference between a dollar store bargain and a dollar store trap. Since then I have a short list of what I grab and what I walk past, and it has saved me money and a couple of fires.

Buy these

• Glassware and dishes. A glass is a glass, and the cheap ones are fine for everyday use.
• Cleaning supplies. Dish soap, sponges, and glass cleaner do the same job at any price.
• Wrapping paper, cards, and gift bags. They get torn and thrown away anyway.
• Storage bins and organizers for the garage or closets. Nobody sees them.
• Kitchen basics like measuring cups, mixing bowls, and spatulas.

Skip these every time

• Chargers, cables, and any electronics. The cheap ones fail fast and can damage your devices. My warm charger proved it.
• Batteries from unknown brands. They leak and die fast. Get name brand from anywhere else.
• Tools. A dollar screwdriver strips in one use, and then it costs more than a real one ever would.
• Makeup and skincare. The ingredients are a mystery and the quality control is worse.
• Food near its date. Check the labels. Some items are fine, but anything perishable is a gamble.

Why the list works

The rule of thumb is: buy cheap where safety and durability do not matter. A dollar spatula that bends is annoying. A dollar charger that shorts is dangerous. The cheap stuff that gets thrown away, packaging, party supplies, cleaning rags, is where the store shines. The cheap stuff that plugs in, holds weight, or touches your skin is where it hides its cost.

My dollar store trip now

I go in with the list and I am out in ten minutes with a full bag for under ten dollars. Wrapping paper for the year, sponges, glass bowls, done. I do not browse the electronics aisle at all, because I know better now. My wallet is lighter, my house is stocked, and my phone charger still works.
