My Eyes Hurt So Bad After Work I Could Not Watch TV — Three Changes Fixed It
I work on a laptop. After work I look at my phone. Then, if I have energy, I watch TV. By 8 PM my eyes felt like sandpaper and I had a low grade headache that started behind my eyes and radiated outward. I thought I needed new glasses. I did not. I needed three changes that cost nothing.

The 20-20-20 Rule Actually Works
Every twenty minutes, look at something twenty feet away for twenty seconds. That is it. Set a timer on your phone if you have to. Your eye muscles are locked at near-focus distance all day. Looking at something far away lets them relax. It is the eye equivalent of standing up and stretching after sitting for hours.
I set a gentle chime on my watch — not an alarm, just a haptic tap every twenty minutes. The first week was annoying. By the second week my afternoon headaches had disappeared. By the third week I did not need the reminder; I just noticed when my eyes felt tight and looked away.
Night Mode Is Not Optional
Every screen you own has a blue light filter. On iPhone it is Night Shift. On Android it is Blue Light Filter or Eye Comfort Shield. On Windows it is Night Light. On Mac it is Night Shift. Turn it on and schedule it from sunset to sunrise.
Blue light suppresses melatonin. Screens blasting full spectrum blue light at 10 PM tell your brain it is noon. Your sleep quality suffers, your eyes strain harder, and the cycle repeats. Night mode makes the screen warm and amber. It looks weird for about two days. Then you stop noticing. Then one night you turn it off by accident and feel like you are staring into the sun.
Blink More. No, Seriously.
People blink about fifteen times per minute normally. Staring at screens, that drops to five to seven times per minute. Your eyes dry out because you are literally not blinking enough. The fix is not eye drops. The fix is remembering to blink. A sticky note on your monitor that says “BLINK” looks stupid. It also works.
I also moved my monitor slightly below eye level. Looking slightly downward keeps your eyelids more closed, which reduces the exposed eye surface and slows evaporation. Three inches lower. That one change made as much difference as the blue light filter.
Quick Summary: 20-20-20 rule: every 20 min, look 20 ft away for 20 seconds. Blue light filter scheduled sunset to sunrise. Consciously blink more. Lower your monitor a few inches. All free. Headaches gone in a week.
