I Lost My SIM Card Ejector Tool at the Airport and a Paper Clip Saved My Entire Trip
I was in the Mexico City airport, had just landed, and needed to swap my SIM card to a local one. I opened the little box the SIM came in. The ejector tool — that tiny metal pin Apple includes with every iPhone — was not there. I had left it at home. Without it, I could not open the SIM tray. Without the SIM tray open, I had no data, no maps, and no way to call my hotel.
I walked to an airport convenience store, bought a pack of gum, and asked the cashier if they sold paper clips. They did. Fifty cents. Best purchase of the trip.
Why a Paper Clip Works
The SIM tray eject mechanism is just a spring-loaded latch. You are not unscrewing anything or applying force — you are pressing a tiny internal button through a pinhole. The original Apple tool is just a precisely sized metal pin. A paper clip is a precisely sized metal pin that costs a fraction of a cent.
How to Do It Without Damaging Your Phone
- Unbend the outer loop of the paper clip — not the inner loop. The outer loop is longer and straighter.
- Straighten it as much as possible. A slight bend is fine, but a sharp kink can get stuck.
- Insert the straight end into the SIM tray hole and push straight in — not at an angle. Angled pressure can damage the internal mechanism.
- Push firmly until you feel the tray pop out slightly. Pull it out the rest of the way with your fingers.
The paper clip is slightly thinner than the OEM ejector tool, so it may feel like it is not engaging. Push a little harder. The mechanism is designed to handle it.
What Not to Use
Needles and sewing pins: Too sharp. They can slip past the eject mechanism and puncture something inside the phone — like the SIM card itself or, worse, internal components.
Toothpicks: Too thick for most SIM tray holes. And they can snap off inside, leaving a wooden plug that is nearly impossible to extract without disassembling the phone.
Earring posts: Tempting because they are the right size. But earrings are often made of soft metals that can bend or break off inside the hole. A paper clip is spring steel — it will not break.
I now keep a paper clip taped inside my passport holder. I have used it in four countries and it has never failed me.
