I moved into an apartment where the bedroom window had been painted shut. Not slightly stuck — fused. The landlord said “just push harder.” I pushed harder. The frame creaked ominously and the glass flexed in a way that made me stop immediately.

A painted-shut window is common in older homes and rentals where painters got sloppy. The fix takes about ten minutes and requires no strength at all — just the right tool and a bit of patience.

Score the seam first

Take a utility knife or a box cutter with a fresh blade and run it along the seam where the window sash meets the frame. Do this on all four sides — top, bottom, left, right. You are cutting through the paint that is bonding the window to the frame. Hold the blade at a slight angle and apply steady pressure. You should feel it slicing through paint, not digging into wood.

This is the step most people skip. They go straight for the pry bar and chip the trim or crack the glass. Score first. Always.

The putty knife technique

Slide a stiff putty knife (not the flexible kind — you want the rigid one) into the seam you just scored. Work it back and forth gently, moving along the entire perimeter. You are not prying the window open yet — you are separating the paint seal the knife started. If the putty knife meets resistance, score that section again with the utility knife.

When to use a pry bar

If the window is still stuck after scoring and working the putty knife around, you can use a small flat pry bar — but put a thin piece of wood or a shim under the fulcrum point so you are prying against that, not against the window frame. Apply slow, steady pressure. Not jerking. Not hammering. Just steady leverage.

You should hear a crack as the paint seal breaks. That is a good sound.

Prevention for next time

Once the window is free, clean the channels with a vacuum and a damp cloth. Apply a dry lubricant (not WD-40 — it attracts dust) like silicone spray or a wax candle rubbed along the tracks. If you paint the room in the future, open and close the window a few times while the paint dries so it does not seal itself shut again.
