Who else tracked white streaks into the house after the first snow? Road salt is great for the roads and awful for your floors. It melts into the carpet, dries as a chalky crust, and if it sits long enough, it can bleach the color out of the fibers. I learned this the expensive way, with a white mark on a hallway rug that never fully came back.

For carpets, act before it dries

The faster you treat a salt stain, the better. Once the salt dries and recrystallizes, it grinds into the fibers when you walk on it. Here is the routine that works for me:

1. Vacuum first to lift the loose salt crystals. Do not scrub, that grinds them deeper.
2. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with one cup of warm water.
3. Dab the stain with a cloth dipped in the mix. Blot, do not rub.
4. Rinse by dabbing with a cloth dipped in plain water.
5. Blot dry with a towel, then vacuum again once it is fully dry.

For hard floors

Salt on tile, laminate, or vinyl is easier, but it can still leave a dull film. Warm water and a few drops of dish soap on a mop is usually enough. If there is a white residue, wipe with a cloth dampened with vinegar water, then mop with clean water. On tile, pay attention to the grout lines, salt likes to settle in the low spots and turns them white.

Why vinegar works

Road salt is mostly sodium chloride or calcium chloride. Water alone dissolves it, but vinegar helps break the bond to the fibers and neutralizes the residue that plain water leaves behind. The vinegar smell disappears as it dries, so do not worry about the house smelling like a salad.

Stopping the problem at the door

The real fix is prevention. I keep a shoe tray and a mat with a lip by the front door, and I do not let anyone walk past it in salty boots. A second mat inside the door catches what the first one misses. My hallway rug has made it through two winters now without a single new white streak.
