I have forgotten sunscreen three times. Three separate beach trips. I now have a permanent checklist taped inside the closet where the beach bag lives. I look at it every time. I have not forgotten sunscreen since.

The secret to a great beach day is not buying expensive gear. It is not forgetting the things that make you want to leave after an hour.

The Non-Negotiable Core List

These go in first, every time, no exceptions:

• Sunscreen — broad spectrum, SPF 30 minimum. Reapply every two hours. Set a phone alarm.
• Water — more than you think. A frozen water bottle doubles as an ice pack and melts into cold drinking water by midday.
• Towel — one large one for lounging. A second small one for wiping hands and face.
• Sunglasses and a hat — the sun reflects off sand and water, doubling the UV exposure to your eyes and face.

The Items Nobody Packs but Everyone Needs

Baby powder. Sprinkle it on sandy feet before getting back in the car. The powder absorbs moisture and the sand brushes right off. It sounds fake. It works. My kids thought I was a wizard the first time I did it.

A fitted sheet instead of a blanket. Flip it upside down, put a heavy item in each corner, and you have walls that keep sand out of your sitting area. I saw a family doing this at the beach last summer and immediately copied them.

Ziploc bags for wet swimsuits, phones in case of sand, and snacks that might explode in the heat. Chocolate chips melt. Ziploc bags contain the mess.

A plastic supermarket bag for trash. Beaches with limited trash cans fill up by noon. Having your own bag means you leave nothing behind.

The Packing Order That Makes Sense

Heavy items on the bottom — water bottles, food containers. This keeps the bag from tipping over. Towels on top, both for padding and for quick access when you arrive and want to claim a spot immediately. Sunscreen in an outside pocket so you can reapply without digging through everything.
