I used to spray oven rack cleaner all over my racks, wrap them in plastic, and let them sit overnight. It worked, but my kitchen smelled like a chemical plant, and I was honestly a little worried every time. The overnight soak method

1. Fill your bathtub or a large plastic bin with hot water.
2. Add a cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar. It will fizz, which is normal and kind of fun.
3. Submerge the racks completely. Weigh them down if they float.
4. Let them soak overnight, or at least six hours.
5. Scrub with a sponge or old dish brush. The gunk should slide off.
6. Rinse well and dry. Do this on a towel so the racks do not drip all over your floor.

Why this works

The baking soda makes the water slightly alkaline, which breaks down grease. The vinegar helps loosen burnt-on food. Together they soften the crust so you are scrubbing it off instead of chipping at it. No fumes, no gloves required.

My mistake the first time

I only soaked for two hours and called it good. The big burnt spots stayed. The soak time is the whole trick, so do not rush it. Overnight is the difference between wiping and scraping. If a spot is stubborn, make a paste of baking soda and water, spread it on thick, and let it sit before scrubbing.

If you have a self-cleaning oven

Check your oven manual first. Some self-cleaning cycles can damage oven racks, and enamel racks need gentler treatment. The soak method is safe for metal racks, but when in doubt, check the manual.

Keep it from getting bad again

Wipe racks down after big spills while the oven is still warm, not hot. A quick wipe every few weeks beats an overnight project twice a year.
