What to Do When Your Wi-Fi Works in One Room But Not Another

The living room had perfect Wi-Fi. Full bars. The bedroom — fifteen feet away, one wall between — got nothing. Not weak signal. Not slow loading. Nothing. My phone would connect and immediately drop. Streaming in bed was impossible. I had to stand in the hallway to send texts.

I spent about six months just accepting this before I actually tried to fix it. The solution was simpler than I expected.

Why this happens

Wi-Fi signals are radio waves. They get blocked by walls, metal objects, mirrors, large appliances, and water — and your body is about sixty percent water. A single wall with metal studs or foil-backed insulation can cut your signal in half. Two walls and you are down to a whisper.

The bedroom probably had signal at some point — it just got attenuated to uselessness by whatever is between the router and your bed.

Fix 1: Move the router (free, try first)

Your router should be as central as possible, elevated (on a shelf, not the floor), and not tucked behind the TV or inside a cabinet. Every foot of clearance helps. Moving my router from behind the TV stand to on top of it improved the bedroom signal from zero bars to one. Not great, but usable.

Also: keep the router away from microwaves, baby monitors, and cordless phones. They operate on the same 2.4 GHz frequency and cause interference.

Fix 2: Switch to 2.4 GHz (free, often overlooked)

5 GHz Wi-Fi is faster but does not travel through walls well. 2.4 GHz is slower but reaches farther and penetrates obstacles better. Most routers broadcast both. In your Wi-Fi settings, look for a network name ending in “2.4G” or check your router settings to enable the 2.4 GHz band. Connect your bedroom devices to that network.

Fix 3: A mesh system or extender (costs money but works)

If moving the router and switching bands does not fix it, you need hardware. A Wi-Fi mesh system — two or three small nodes you place around the house — creates a single seamless network. One node connects to your modem, the others relay the signal. A basic two-pack costs around sixty to eighty dollars.

A Wi-Fi extender is cheaper (twenty to thirty dollars) but creates a separate network name and cuts your speed in half. Mesh is better if you can swing it. I went with a mesh system, placed one node in the hallway between the living room and bedroom, and now I get full bars everywhere.
