I used to buy things when I needed them. Headphones broke? Buy new headphones. Needed a winter coat? Buy it in November when it was actually cold. This is the most expensive way to shop. Retail runs on a predictable calendar, and knowing what goes on sale when saves twenty to fifty percent on almost everything you buy.

January through March: organization and winter clearance

January is for storage and organization sales. Storage bins, closet systems, shelving units everything you need to organize the stuff you accumulated over the holidays is discounted. Also: gym memberships and fitness equipment. Gyms know New Year’s resolutions mean signups, and they compete on price. White sales for linens and bedding have been a January tradition for over a century.

February brings winter coat and boot clearance. Retailers need floor space for spring inventory. A quality winter coat at sixty percent off in February costs less than a cheap coat in November. Mattresses also go on sale around Presidents’ Day. Furniture follows in March when new models arrive and floor samples need to go.

April through June: spring and graduation

April is vacuum cleaner season. New models launch and last year’s get discounted. Also spring cleaning supplies and tools. May means small kitchen appliances on sale for Mother’s Day and graduation gifting stand mixers, blenders, coffee makers. June is the best month for laptops and electronics as retailers clear inventory before back-to-school season starts in July.

I bought my laptop in June two years ago. Same model was two hundred dollars more in August when demand peaked for students heading to college.

July through September: back to school

July is Amazon Prime Day and competing retailers run their own sales. Good for electronics and Amazon devices specifically. August is back-to-school supplies prices on notebooks and pencils drop below cost at some stores to get you in the door. September is surprisingly good for major appliances as new refrigerator and washer models arrive and last year’s units get clearance pricing.

October through December: holidays and year-end

October through early November is the sweet spot for holiday shopping before the Black Friday chaos. November is Black Friday and Cyber Monday obviously, but the real deals are on TVs and last-generation electronics, not new releases. December clears out toys, gift sets, and holiday decorations for up to seventy-five percent off after Christmas.
