The Ticking Clock

My neighbor waits until every leaf has fallen to clean his gutters. Every November he is on a ladder in freezing weather, scooping out a wet brown sludge that has already packed down hard. I used to do the same thing, until one rainy week taught me why that timing is wrong.

Clean your gutters before the leaves finish falling, not after. Here is the reason.

One Leaf Layer Beats a Whole Tree

When gutters clog partway, water backs up and finds the seams, the corners, and the gaps between sections. That is how you get water dripping behind the siding, pooling at the foundation, and eventually seeping into the basement. A gutter full to the top does the same damage as a gutter completely blocked, and it happens faster than you think.

One rainstorm with a half clogged gutter can dump water where it should not be. Leaves still falling just make the situation worse, because each new layer presses the old one down into a denser plug.

The Two Pass Approach

Do it in two quick passes:

1. Now: clear out what has collected so far, especially around downspout openings
2. After the last leaves drop: one final scoop and a rinse with the hose

Two twenty minute sessions beat one miserable three hour session in freezing rain. And while you are up there, check that downspouts drain away from the foundation. A clean gutter that empties next to your house still does damage.

The Safety Part

Only use a ladder on solid, level ground, and never lean it against the gutter itself. If your house has two stories, a gutter scoop on an extendable pole beats climbing at all.

I clean mine in October, then again in late November. My basement has stayed dry through every storm since, and I have not spent a single freezing afternoon on a ladder.
