I used to be the person who Googled “brand name coupon code” at checkout and tried every expired code in the list. Maybe one in ten worked. The other nine were expired, fake, or only valid for products I was not buying. It was a waste of time wrapped in the illusion of saving money.

Then I found browser extensions that do it automatically. Here are the five that actually work.

1. Honey (PayPal)

The biggest one for a reason. Installed as a browser extension, it automatically tries every known coupon code at checkout. You click one button and it runs through 20+ codes in 30 seconds. It also tracks price history on Amazon so you know if that “50% off” deal is actually a good price or if the item was the same price last week. Free. Makes money through commissions, not user data.

2. Capital One Shopping

Works differently from Honey. Instead of coupon codes, it automatically applies available discounts and compares prices across retailers. If you are looking at an item on one site, it tells you if it is cheaper somewhere else — including shipping. You do not need a Capital One account to use it.

3. Rakuten (formerly Ebates)

Not coupon codes — cash back. You shop through their link, and they give you a percentage back. Rates vary from 1% to 15% depending on the store. They pay out quarterly via check or PayPal. I have gotten about $300 back in two years just by clicking through their site before shopping.

4. CamelCamelCamel

Amazon-specific price tracker. Shows you the full price history of any item so you know if you are getting a genuine deal or if the price was dropped for 24 hours just to look like a deal. Also lets you set price-drop alerts.

5. Coupert

Similar to Honey but sometimes finds codes Honey misses. They compete, which is good for you — install both, and whichever finds a working code wins.
