I bought a house where every door hinge, every cabinet pull, every latch plate had been painted over. Multiple layers. Some of them white latex, some almond oil-based from different decades. The previous owners had painted right over the hardware without removing a single screw.

I tried scraping. I tried a wire brush. I tried soaking in a bucket of stripper — that used an entire gallon and still missed the crevices. Then my contractor friend showed me the bag method. I stripped forty pieces of hardware with one cup of stripper.

Why the Bag Method Works Better

Paint stripper needs time and it needs to stay wet. If you brush it on and leave it in open air, the solvents evaporate in fifteen minutes and the paint re-hardens. The sealed bag traps the solvents against the hardware. Nothing evaporates. The stripper stays active for hours.

The Process

1. Remove the hardware — hinges, knobs, pulls, plates. Lay them in a Ziplock bag in a single layer. Do not stack them.
2. Squirt in enough gel paint stripper to coat every piece. Seal the bag, pressing out as much air as you can.
3. Massage the bag gently so the stripper covers all surfaces.
4. Wait. For latex paint, an hour is usually enough. For oil-based or multiple layers, leave it overnight.
5. Open the bag outside — the fumes are strong. The paint will be wrinkled and soft. Scrub with an old toothbrush or a brass wire brush under running water. It comes off in sheets.

I used half a cup of stripper to do my entire kitchen’s worth of hardware. A single cup handled the whole house.

Cleaning Up After

Rinse the hardware thoroughly. Dry it immediately with a rag — old steel will start to rust within minutes if left wet. If the original finish underneath is brass or copper, a quick buff with Brasso or even toothpaste on a cloth brings it back to life.

Dispose of the bag and the paint sludge according to your local hazardous waste rules. Do not pour the residue down a drain.
