I found sand in my car three months after a beach trip. Under the back seat. Somehow. Sand is the glitter of the natural world—it gets everywhere and never fully leaves. After one disastrous trip where my toddler poured a bucket of wet sand directly onto the back seat, I developed a system.

Baby powder. That is the secret. Here is why and how.

Baby Powder: The Sand Remover

Sand sticks to skin because of moisture—ocean water, sweat, sunscreen residue. Dust baby powder over sandy skin and it absorbs that moisture instantly. The sand just falls off instead of clinging. This works especially well on kids, who seem to attract sand like they are magnetized.

Keep a travel-size baby powder in your beach bag. Before getting in the car, dust everyone’s legs, arms, and feet. Brush the sand off over the pavement, not your car floor. You will cut the sand tracked into your car by about eighty percent.

Fitted Sheet as a Beach Blanket

Bring an old fitted sheet instead of a regular blanket. Put heavy items in each corner to weigh it down, creating raised sides. Sand that gets kicked up hits the fabric walls instead of flying onto your towels and bags. At the end of the day, shake it out away from everyone and ball it up. Way less sand comes home.

Car Cleanup That Actually Works

Get a stiff-bristle brush—the kind for scrubbing grout. Brush dried sand out of car upholstery before you vacuum. Vacuuming alone just pushes sand deeper. The brush loosens it first. Then vacuum. Then vacuum again from a different angle. Sand is patient. You have to be more patient.

I still find the occasional grain in July. But now it is a curiosity, not a layer.
