The Trick to Dusting Hard-to-Reach Places with a Long Handle

The Top of the Cabinet

I ignored the top of my kitchen cabinets for a year. It was my own private dust museum up there, and I only noticed when I stood on a stool to reach something and sneezed for twenty minutes. The fix turned out to be a broom and a sock.

You do not need a fancy extendable duster. A regular broom with a clean sock over the head reaches ceiling corners, cabinet tops, and high shelves without a ladder.

The Sock Broom Method

Slide a slightly damp sock over the broom head. The damp fabric grabs dust instead of pushing it around, and the broom handle gives you reach. Wipe in one direction, then flip the sock for a clean side.

For really high spots, a microfiber cloth held by a rubber band works even better than a sock because the fibers trap more dust. Same broom, same reach.

Make the Dusting Last Longer

Dust comes back faster if you skip this step: use a spray polish or a few drops of water on the cloth, not a dry wipe. Dry dusting just redistributes the particles into the air, and they settle back down in a week.

  • Sock or microfiber over a broom head
  • Damp, not soaking wet
  • Work top to bottom so dust falls onto areas you already cleaned
  • Clean the cloth between rooms

I now do the cabinet tops every other month and it takes five minutes. Consistency beats intensity with dusting, and the sock trick is cheap enough that you never have an excuse to skip it.

📋 Quick Summary: Put a damp sock or microfiber cloth over a broom head to dust high spots. Damp cloths grab dust, and a quick pass every other month keeps it under control.
