The Simple Way to Fix a Drawer That Sticks When Opening
I had a dresser drawer that stuck so bad I would yank it open with both hands and a grunt. Then one day I actually looked at the tracks and saw the problem was obvious: the drawer was riding on a ridge of old wax and dust that had turned into glue over the years.
Most sticky drawers are not broken. They are dirty or misaligned. Here is how to fix one in about fifteen minutes.
Pull it out and clean the tracks
Take the drawer all the way out. Wipe the runner rails on the drawer and the guides in the cabinet with a damp cloth, then a dry one. You will be surprised how much gunk comes off. This alone fixes a huge percentage of sticky drawers, because the debris builds up until the drawer has to drag over it.

Wax the contact points
After cleaning, rub a candle, bar of soap, or furniture wax along the rails where the drawer slides. Candle wax is the classic because it is cheap and you probably have one. The wax lets the wood slide instead of grab. Do not use oil, it collects dust and makes things worse later.
Check for misalignment
If the drawer still sticks after cleaning and waxing, look at how it sits in the opening. A drawer that tilts or rubs on one side is usually slightly twisted or has a loose joint. Tighten any visible screws on the rails. If the drawer front rubs on the frame, sand the high spot lightly with fine sandpaper.
Look at the bottom panel
On many dressers, the drawer bottom is a thin panel that can sag and drag on the rail below. If your drawer scrapes on the bottom, push the panel back into its groove and add a small nail or screw to hold it. A sagging bottom is a five-minute fix that feels like magic.
Know when to call it
If a drawer is so warped that it will not slide no matter what, the track may be worn out. Replacement drawer slides are cheap and screw on in minutes. Sometimes the honest fix is new hardware, not more wax.
My dresser drawer has been smooth for a year now off a single candle waxing. The grunt is gone, and I stopped slamming it in frustration.
📋 Quick Summary: Clean the drawer rails, wax the contact points with a candle, check alignment and sagging panels, and replace worn slides if needed.
