My first caulking job around the bathroom tub looked like I had applied it with my elbow. Lumpy. Uneven. How to Do It

Apply your caulk bead as you normally would — cut the nozzle at a 45-degree angle, run a steady bead along the joint. Do not worry about making it perfect. Then take an old credit card, gift card, or hotel key card — anything stiff plastic with a straight edge. Hold it at a 45-degree angle against the joint and drag it along the bead in one smooth motion.

The card’s edge shapes the caulk into a perfect concave bead. The excess caulk collects on the card — wipe it on a paper towel between passes. The result is cleaner than what most people achieve with their finger, and vastly cleaner than leaving the bead untouched.

Why Not Just Use Your Finger?

A wet finger works, but it creates a rounded bead that sits on top of the joint rather than pressing into it. The card pushes the caulk into the gap while simultaneously smoothing the surface. The seal is better and it lasts longer. Plus, you do not get caulk all over your hands.

One Important Step

Before you start smoothing, mist the caulk bead with soapy water from a spray bottle. Just a light mist. The soapy water prevents the caulk from sticking to the card. Without it, the card drags and pulls the caulk out of the joint instead of smoothing it.
