My dog did me the favor of catching a nail on the kitchen vinyl and peeling back a two inch flap right in the middle of the walkway. I stared at that tear for a month, convinced the only fix was replacing the whole floor or calling someone who would charge me hundreds of dollars. Then I fixed it in an afternoon with a tube of adhesive and a razor blade.

What you actually need

The supplies are cheap and you probably own most of them: vinyl flooring adhesive or super glue, a razor blade or utility knife, a heavy book, and a clean rag. If the tear is jagged, you also want a piece of scrap vinyl for a patch, or you can cut from a spot nobody sees, like inside a closet.

Fix a flap first, patch a hole second

If the vinyl is peeled up but not missing, like mine was:

1. Clean under the flap with a rag and let it dry completely. Dirt kills the bond.
2. Spread a thin layer of adhesive under the flap.
3. Press it down and roll it flat with a rolling pin or the side of a glass.
4. Weight it with a heavy book and leave it for a few hours.

When you need to patch a missing piece

For an actual hole, trace the shape onto scrap vinyl, cut it slightly larger, and cut through the damaged area so the patch fits exactly. Apply adhesive to the patch and press it in. Match the pattern direction before you cut. Vinyl patterns are directional, and a patch turned the wrong way is instantly visible. I learned this after cutting my first patch wrong and having to redo it.

Make the seam disappear

Wipe away any adhesive that squeezes out before it dries, then run a seam roller or the back of a spoon along the edges. If the cut line still shows, a thin line of seam sealer made for vinyl floors blends it in. My patch is not invisible, but you have to kneel and squint to find it, and the dog has not managed to peel it up again. That is a win in my book.
