Spring Wardrobe Purge — What to Keep and What to Donate

My closet had a pair of jeans I had not worn since college. I graduated eleven years ago. They did not fit, they were not in style, and they were taking up prime hanger real estate. I kept them because “maybe someday.” Someday is not a storage strategy.

The Reverse Hanger Trick

On the first day of spring, turn every hanger backward so the hook faces you. When you wear something and put it back, hang it normally. By the end of spring, anything still on a backward hanger has not been worn in months. Those items go into a donation bag. This removes the emotion from the decision — the hanger tells you the truth about what you actually wear.

Rules for Keeping

Ask three questions about each piece: Does it fit me right now? Not “after I lose five pounds.” Right now. Have I worn it in the last year? If no, you probably will not wear it next year either. Would I buy it again today? If the answer is no, it is taking up space.

What to Do With the Donate Pile

Bag it immediately and put it in your car trunk. Do not let it sit in a “maybe” pile in the corner of your bedroom for three weeks. I have done this. The pile migrates back into the closet. Put it in the car and drop it at a donation center the next time you pass one.

For pieces that are too worn to donate, some brands have take-back programs. H&M, Patagonia, and The North Face will accept old textiles for recycling regardless of brand. Look up textile recycling in your area — most clothes that go to landfill could have been recycled.

Storage for Next-Winter Clothes

Vacuum bags are worth it. They shrink bulky sweaters and coats down to a quarter of their size. Store them under the bed or on the top shelf. Add a dryer sheet to each bag so they come out smelling fresh instead of like a basement.

📋 Quick Summary: Reverse hanger trick reveals what you actually wear. Keep only what fits, gets worn, and would be bought again. Donate immediately. Vacuum-bag off-season items.
