Save Phone Storage by Deleting Old WhatsApp and iMessage Attachments
My phone said storage full in the middle of a video call, and of course it picked the worst possible moment. I deleted apps, cleared photos, and freed maybe a gigabyte. Then I looked closer and found the real space hog: years of chat attachments, videos, and voice messages hiding inside my messaging apps.

Text threads are full of junk media that you will never watch again. Cleaning them out can free several gigabytes in one sitting.
On iPhone: Let iOS Find the Junk
Go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage. Wait for the list to load, then look at Messages. iOS shows you the size of your attachments and lets you review the largest ones.
Tap Review Large Attachments and you will see the biggest videos and photos in your threads, sorted by size. Delete the ones you do not need. I freed two gigabytes of old videos I had completely forgotten about.
On Android: Clear WhatsApp Storage
Inside WhatsApp, go to Settings, Storage and Data, then Manage Storage. It groups items by chat and shows the biggest files first.
You can delete everything over a certain size in a couple of taps, or go chat by chat. I deleted my family group’s video spam first, then a work channel that had been forwarding memes for years.
Stop It From Piling Up Again
The cleanup is only half the fix. Stop the downloads at the source.
- In WhatsApp, set media auto-download to Wi-Fi only, or off
- In iMessage, turn off the Low Quality mode only if you want; instead just be honest that you will never rewatch that video
- Set messages to auto-delete after a year in iOS message settings
I changed my auto-download settings after the cleanup, and my phone has stayed comfortably under full for three months now.
📋 Quick Summary: Use iPhone Storage or WhatsApp Manage Storage to find large chat attachments, delete the junk, and set media downloads to Wi-Fi only.
