Romantic dinner. New candles. Red wax. White carpet. You see where this is going. My partner knocked one over reaching for the wine and a crimson puddle the size of a dinner plate soaked into the fibers before I could even react. I think I stopped breathing for a solid five seconds.

I had two competing instincts: google frantically, or start scrubbing. Scrubbing is wrong. Please do not scrub candle wax. I learned that the hard way on a previous incident with a different carpet and different candle. Scrubbing pushes it deeper.

Here is what actually works, on carpet, wood, and fabric.

For Carpet: The Iron and Paper Bag Method

Grab a brown paper grocery bag. Cut it flat. Place it over the wax stain. Set your iron to medium heat — no steam. Press the iron onto the paper bag over the wax. Hold for ten seconds. Lift.

The wax melts, soaks into the paper, and transfers off the carpet fibers. Repeat with fresh sections of the bag until no more wax comes up. It took me about six passes for that dinner plate sized spill. The carpet looked like nothing happened.

If there is any dye stain left from colored wax, dab with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. Red wax on white carpet left a faint pink shadow. Rubbing alcohol lifted it in about two minutes of gentle blotting.

For Hard Surfaces: Freezer Then Credit Card

Wood table? Tile floor? Ice cube on the wax for five minutes. It hardens and becomes brittle. Then gently scrape with an old credit card — it lifts off in chunks without scratching. Soft plastic is the key. A metal scraper will destroy your finish.

For Clothing: Freezer Works Here Too

Throw the garment in the freezer for an hour. The wax freezes solid. Crumble it off with your fingers. Any residue gets the iron and paper bag treatment, same as carpet.

I have a brown paper bag in my cleaning closet now. Permanently. You never know when you are going to need it.
