I used to clean my bathroom by wandering in with a sponge and a bottle of spray, staring at things, and cleaning whatever caught my eye first. I’d spend forty minutes in there and somehow still miss the mirror.

Then my sister, who cleans vacation rentals for a living, watched me one day and said: “You don’t have a system. You’re just reacting.” She showed me her order — the same order she uses for every single bathroom she cleans — and I cut my time to ten minutes flat.

The secret isn’t scrubbing harder. It’s working top to bottom so dirt falls onto surfaces you haven’t cleaned yet.

The ten minute system

1. Spray everything first (1 min): Spray toilet bowl cleaner inside the bowl. Spray shower walls and tub with whatever you use. Spray the sink and counter. Let everything sit while you work on the next steps. Dwell time does the scrubbing for you.



2. Mirror (1 min): Wipe with a dry microfiber cloth. If it’s really bad, a spritz of glass cleaner first. The key is a dry buff after — that’s where the streak-free finish comes from.
3. Counters and sink (2 min): Wipe down with a damp cloth or sponge. Toothpaste splatter, soap scum, hair — get it all. Use an old toothbrush around the faucet base and drain if needed.
4. Toilet (2 min): Scrub the bowl with a brush, flush. Wipe the outside — seat, lid, rim, base. Use a dedicated cloth or paper towel. Do not use the same cloth you used on the sink. I have a stack of cheap washcloths just for toilet duty.
5. Shower and tub (2 min): The cleaner has been sitting for several minutes now. Scrub quickly, rinse. For glass shower doors, a squeegee after rinsing prevents water spots.
6. Floor (1 min): Quick sweep or vacuum. If the floor is tile and needs more, a damp mop. Honestly, if you’ve been wiping things down and sweeping regularly, a quick pass with a microfiber mop is enough.
7. Final check (1 min): Empty the trash, replace the hand towel, close the shower curtain so it dries without mildew.

Why this order matters

If you clean the floor first and then wipe the counter, crumbs fall on your clean floor and you have to do it again. If you clean the mirror before spraying the sink, cleaner mist lands on the mirror and now it’s streaky. Top to bottom, left to right. Every professional cleaner uses some version of this because it eliminates rework.

I keep a small caddy under the bathroom sink with everything I need: glass cleaner, all-purpose spray, toilet bowl cleaner, microfiber cloths, scrub brush, old toothbrush, squeegee. When everything lives in one place, there’s no friction to start.

Ten minutes. I timed it. That’s with a separate toilet cloth and actually scrubbing the shower. If your bathroom is huge, maybe fifteen. But a standard apartment bathroom — ten minutes with this system is realistic.
