I Cleaned My Mattress After Five Years. What Came Out Was Gross.

I had the same mattress for five years before I cleaned it beyond changing the sheets. I do not recommend waiting that long.

When I finally stripped everything off and really looked at it, there were yellow sweat stains, a faint musty smell I had gotten used to, and—I am not exaggerating—the vacuum canister filled with fine gray powder that was mostly dead skin cells and dust mite debris.

The Full Deep Clean (What Actually Works)

  1. Strip everything. Sheets, mattress protector, pillow covers. Wash them in hot water.
  2. Vacuum every inch. Use the upholstery attachment. Go slowly. Do the top, the sides, the seams. Dust mites live in seams.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda everywhere. A full box. Do not be stingy. Baking soda absorbs moisture, oils, and odors trapped in the top layer of fabric.
  4. Add a few drops of essential oil to the baking soda if you want. Lavender or tea tree. Mix it in before sprinkling.
  5. Let it sit for at least an hour. Two hours is better. Overnight is best.
  6. Vacuum again. Thoroughly. The baking soda will have absorbed the oils and smells—vacuuming removes it all.

The Sweat Stain Fix

Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and a drop of dish soap into a paste. Spread it on the yellow stains. Let it dry completely—about 30 minutes—then scrape off the dried powder and vacuum. The stain lifts with it.

This works because hydrogen peroxide breaks down the proteins in sweat that cause yellowing, while baking soda pulls the broken-down residue out of the fibers.

How Often Should You Actually Do This?

Every three months for the baking soda refresh. Twice a year for the deep clean with stain treatment. I now have a calendar reminder. My mattress does not smell like anything anymore—which is exactly what you want from a mattress.

Quick Summary: Vacuum, coat with baking soda, let sit 2+ hours, vacuum again. Spot-treat sweat stains with hydrogen peroxide paste. Do it every 3 months.
