How to Stop Grinding Your Teeth at Night

My dentist told me I grind my teeth, and I did not believe her until I looked at my molars in a mirror. They were flat on top. I had been clenching my jaw every night without knowing it, waking up with headaches and a sore jaw, and thinking it was stress or bad pillows.

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is incredibly common, and most people do not know they do it. The good news is that you can manage it without a big lifestyle overhaul.

What you can do tonight

  1. Get a mouth guard. A dentist-fitted guard is best, but a boil-and-bite guard from the drugstore is a solid start. It protects your teeth while you figure out the cause.
  2. Warm compress on your jaw before bed. Heat relaxes the jaw muscles.
  3. Loosen your jaw. Rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth, teeth apart. That is the natural resting position your jaw should hold at night.
  4. Cut the caffeine after noon. Caffeine amps up the nervous system, and for me it directly made the grinding worse.

Why you grind

Stress is the biggest trigger, but it is not the only one. Alcohol, caffeine, and certain medications can all increase grinding. So can sleep issues like sleep apnea, which is worth mentioning to your doctor if the grinding is severe.

My experience

The guard helped immediately with the tooth damage and the morning jaw pain. What actually reduced the grinding itself was the caffeine cutoff. I dropped my afternoon coffee and my morning jaw soreness mostly disappeared within a couple of weeks. The guard stays as insurance, because the habit does not vanish overnight.

When to see a pro

If you wake up with headaches often, or your jaw clicks, or your teeth are already worn, see a dentist. They can fit you for a proper guard and check for damage you cannot see. Grinding can crack teeth over time, and that is a much bigger bill than a guard.

📋 Quick Summary: Wear a mouth guard, relax your jaw before bed, and cut caffeine after noon to reduce teeth grinding. See a dentist if you have headaches or worn teeth.

I cannot stop the habit completely, but I stopped the damage, and my mornings are a lot better.
