The Detergent Math

I used to pour detergent straight into the machine with a big splash and call it a day. Then I noticed I was buying a new bottle every three weeks. I was not doing more laundry. I was using too much soap.

You can cut your laundry costs without buying the cheap stuff that leaves your clothes feeling stiff.

Use Less Than You Think

Most people use two to three times the detergent they need. Modern machines and concentrated formulas do the work with a small amount. Check the fill line on the cap and go below it. Start with half of what you usually pour and see if your clothes come out clean. They will.

Too much detergent actually hurts. It leaves residue on fabric, traps odors, and makes machines smell over time. Less soap means cleaner clothes and a cleaner washer.

Skip the Extras

Fabric softener is mostly optional. A quarter cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle softens clothes, removes residue, and costs pennies. Your clothes will not smell like vinegar, I promise. The smell washes away with the rinse.

Dryer sheets can be replaced with wool dryer balls. One set lasts for years, cuts drying time, and costs less than a box of sheets after a few months. Add a few drops of essential oil to the balls if you want scent.

Wash Cold and Full

Cold water cleans almost everything and saves the money your water heater would spend. Reserve hot water for sheets, towels, and heavily soiled items.

Run full loads. A half load uses nearly the same water and energy as a full one. Combining two partial loads into one is free money.

1. Use half the detergent you normally pour
2. Swap softener for white vinegar
3. Replace dryer sheets with wool balls
4. Wash cold, run full loads

My detergent bottles now last about three times longer. Same brand, same clean clothes, and the laundry budget finally stopped bleeding.
