How to Quiet Squeaky Stairs From the Basement Side
My stairs announce every single person who walks on them. You can hear someone coming from two rooms away, which was charming for exactly one day and then it was just noise. The worst tread creaked every time, like the house was complaining about its own weight.
Find the actual squeak
Squeaks happen where the tread rubs against the stringer or a nail has worked loose. Walk the stairs slowly and press on each tread until you find the noisy spots. Mark them with a small piece of tape. Crawling under the stairs and having someone walk above you is even better, because you can see the movement.
The basement fix, step by step
If your staircase has an open underside, this takes about twenty minutes:
- Look for the gap between the tread and the stringer where they meet.
- Slide a thin piece of wood shim coated in wood glue into the gap. Do not hammer it hard, you just want it snug.
- Wipe off the glue that squeezes out before it dries.
- For extra insurance, screw a small metal bracket across the joint.

No access underneath? Try this instead
My front stairs are closed in, so I could not get under them. For those, I drove trim screws down through the top of the tread at an angle into the stringer below, then filled the tiny holes with wood putty and matched the stain. It sounds scary, but a countersink bit makes it clean and you can barely see the repairs.
What squeaks are telling you
A squeak is not an emergency. It is just two pieces of wood rubbing together that should be locked tight. If the stair feels bouncy or shifts sideways when you step on it, that is a bigger problem and you should get it looked at. But plain noise? Fix it once with shims and glue and you are done for years. Mine have been quiet for two winters now, and honestly I miss knowing when the kids are sneaking downstairs.
📋 Quick Summary: Find the loose treads, shim the gap between tread and stringer with glued wood shims from underneath, or drive angled trim screws down through the top when the underside is closed in.
