How to Plan a Cheap Weekend Trip Without Feeling Cheap

Last spring I took a weekend trip to a coastal town two hours away. Hotel on the beach, seafood dinner, wine tasting, the whole thing. Total for two people: under two hundred dollars. Everyone I told asked if I had a friend who worked at the hotel. Nope. I just stopped paying for the parts of travel that do not actually make the trip better.

Spend on the Experience, Not the Logistics

Most travel spending goes to transportation, lodging, and food — three things that are not the point of the trip. The point is being somewhere different, doing something you cannot do at home. Spend on that. Cut everything else.

How to Slash Each Category

Lodging: Do not book a hotel in the center of town. Stay fifteen minutes outside and the price drops by half. I use a site that compares hotel prices across all booking platforms — pick the one with the best cancellation policy. Or try a bed and breakfast run by a retired couple. The breakfast is included and better than a hotel buffet.

Transportation: If it is under four hours, drive. Gas costs less than two train or plane tickets. Pack a cooler with sandwiches, drinks, and snacks so you are not buying ten-dollar gas station sandwiches.

Food: One nice dinner out, one cheap lunch, and breakfast from a grocery store. You do not need three restaurant meals a day to feel like you are on vacation. Find a local bakery for pastries and coffee — costs a third of a sit-down breakfast and feels more authentic.

The Rule That Changed How I Travel

I pick one thing I will splurge on and cheap out on everything else. On that beach trip, the splurge was the seafood dinner with an ocean view — forty dollars a plate and worth every cent. The rest of the weekend was free: walking the beach, hiking a state park trail, browsing a used bookstore. The trip felt indulgent because the one thing that mattered was perfect.

Previous version of me would have tried to make every meal special, stayed at a pricier hotel, and ended up spending twice as much for a less memorable weekend.

📋 Quick Summary: Pick one thing to splurge on and cut everything else. Stay 15 minutes outside town, drive instead of fly for trips under four hours, pack a cooler, and eat one nice meal per day max. The trip feels indulgent because the thing that matters was perfect.
