How to Make Your Old Laptop Feel Fast Again
My laptop from 2019 was taking four minutes to boot up. Opening Chrome felt like asking a favor. I was about to drop a thousand dollars on a new one when a friend in IT said “before you buy anything, try these three things.”
I did all three. Total cost: zero dollars. The laptop boots in 40 seconds now and Chrome opens instantly.

Clean Install the Operating System
The single biggest difference came from wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows from scratch. Years of updates, leftover files from uninstalled programs, registry clutter — it all accumulates like junk in an attic.
Back up your important files first. Then use the built-in “Reset this PC” option or create a USB installer from Microsoft’s website. Choose the option to remove everything. A clean install strips out all the bloatware, old drivers, and invisible cruft.
It took about two hours total including reinstalling the programs I actually use. Worth every minute.
Kill Startup Programs
Right-click the taskbar, open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab. You will see a list of programs that launch every time you turn on your computer. Most of them do not need to.
I disabled everything except my antivirus and OneDrive. Spotify, Steam, Discord, Adobe Updater — they can start when I actually open them. My boot time dropped by 20 seconds from this alone.
Check for Malware
Run Malwarebytes free version once. It finds things that Windows Defender misses — browser hijackers, adware, cryptominers that eat CPU in the background. My scan found a cryptominer that had been running for months without me knowing.
Between the clean install, startup cleanup, and malware removal, my laptop feels like a different machine. I am not buying a new one this year.
📋 Quick Summary: Clean OS install, disable startup programs, scan for malware — free fixes that make an old laptop feel brand new.
