How to Fix a TV Remote That Only Works When You Are Close
When did I start having to stand up and walk toward the TV just to change the channel? Somewhere in the last year, and I only noticed when my wife pointed out that I was doing it every night.
A remote that works from six inches but not from the couch has a specific set of causes, and almost none of them mean buying a new remote.
The most likely cause: the emitter is dirty
There is a small clear bulb at the front of the remote, usually behind a plastic window. Skin oil and dust build up on it, and a thin film cuts your range dramatically without ever making the remote stop working entirely.
Wipe it with a cotton swab and a little rubbing alcohol. This fixes more short range remotes than anything else on this list.
The rest of the list, in order
- Batteries. Weak batteries do not die all at once. They fade, and the first symptom is reduced range. Put in fresh ones and test before you try anything else, because this is the cause about half the time.
- Clean the battery contacts. Take the batteries out and look at the springs. Green or white crust on the terminals blocks current. Scrub them with a pencil eraser or a swab and a little vinegar.
- Check the infrared window on the TV. The receiver on the TV itself also collects dust. Wipe it. If it is behind a cabinet glass door, that glass can cut your range in half.
- Test with a phone camera. Point the remote at your phone camera and press a button. A working remote shows a faint purple or white flash on screen. No flash means the remote is dead, not the TV.
- Replace the remote. Generic replacements for most TV brands cost ten to fifteen dollars and program by entering a code.
Do not put the remote next to a lamp or a heater. Heat degrades the rubber membrane under the buttons, and that is what makes buttons feel mushy and require a hard press to register.
One thing people rarely check
If you recently moved a soundbar or a smart speaker, you may have blocked the path. Infrared needs line of sight, and a two inch shift of a device on the console can be enough to break it. I moved a picture frame on our console and did not connect it to the remote problem for a week.
Ours turned out to be the contacts, not the batteries. Ten minutes with a swab and a pencil eraser and it works from across the room again. The replacement remote is still in the drawer.
