How to Defrost Your Car Windshield Without Damaging the Glass
I once poured hot water on a frosted windshield because I was late for work. The glass cracked. Twelve hundred dollars later I learned to be patient.
What Not to Do
- Hot water. The temperature shock can crack the glass. Even warm water is risky in freezing weather.
- Metal scrapers or a credit card used hard. You will scratch the glass and ruin the card.
- Wipers on a frozen windshield. You can burn out the wiper motor or tear the blades.
The Fast, Safe Way
- Start the car and turn on the defroster on full heat, with recirculate off and the AC on. The AC pulls moisture out of the air and clears the inside of the glass faster.
- Turn on the rear defroster and the mirror heaters if you have them.
- Pour rubbing alcohol or a commercial de icer into a spray bottle and mist the outside. It melts the bond without a temperature shock.
- Scrape with a plastic scraper, top down, in long strokes.
If you have a minute the night before, spray the glass and flip the wipers up so the blades do not freeze to it. That saves you the worst few minutes in the morning.
