I noticed the bathroom exhaust fan was barely pulling air anymore. When I looked up, the cover was coated in a layer of dust so thick it looked like gray felt. I had never once cleaned it, and the fan was paying for my neglect.

A clogged fan cover makes the fan work harder, move less air, and sometimes get loud. The fix is easy and takes about fifteen minutes.

Pop the Cover Off First

Most covers just clip in. Gently pry the edge with a flathead screwdriver or your fingers and it should snap free. Some models have a small screw, so check for that first.

Once it is off, vacuum the visible dust from both the cover and the fan opening behind it. This keeps the dust from falling everywhere when you clean the cover.

Soak and Scrub

Fill a sink with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Drop the cover in and let it soak for ten minutes. The dust softens and lifts right off.

Scrub with an old toothbrush, especially in the vents. Rinse, dry completely, and snap it back on. Make sure it is bone dry before reinstalling so dust does not stick to it again.

Do This Every Three Months

I set a reminder now. A quick quarterly clean keeps the fan quiet and the bathroom mold-free, because the fan is the thing pulling humid air out after every shower.

While the cover is off, use a dry cloth to wipe the fan blades themselves. They collect dust too, and dirty blades are why some fans start wobbling.
