Eliminate Shoe Odor Overnight With Baking Soda

I took my shoes off at a friend’s house and my own feet smelled so bad I pretended I needed something from the car just to air them out. That was the moment I decided to solve this for good.

I tried sprays, dryer sheets, those little cedar balls. Nothing worked until I used something that was already in my kitchen cabinet. One ingredient. Totally free because I already owned it.

Why Baking Soda Works

Baking soda — sodium bicarbonate — is amphoteric, which means it neutralizes both acids and bases. The bacteria that live in your shoes produce smelly acids as they break down sweat. Baking soda neutralizes those acids, eliminating the smell rather than just covering it up with perfume.

Most shoe sprays are 90% fragrance and 10% alcohol. They mask the smell for a few hours. Baking soda removes it.

The Overnight Method

  1. Sprinkle a generous tablespoon of baking soda into each shoe.
  2. Shake the shoe to distribute it evenly — get it into the toe box where sweat concentrates.
  3. Leave overnight — at least 8 hours.
  4. In the morning, shake the shoes out over a trash can or outside. Tap the soles to get the remaining powder out.
  5. Optional: vacuum the inside with a crevice tool to remove every trace.

That is it. The shoes will smell like nothing. Not like perfume, not like “fresh scent” — like nothing. Which is exactly what you want.

For Really Bad Cases

If one night does not fully fix it — some gym shoes need more love — repeat for 2-3 nights in a row. Also check the insoles. If they are removable, take them out and sprinkle baking soda on both sides. The insoles absorb most of the sweat and are usually the primary source of the smell.

For washable insoles, I wash them in the sink with warm water and a little detergent, then let them dry completely before putting them back. Alone this helps enormously.

Prevention

After the smell is gone, prevent it from coming back by rotating shoes. Wearing the same pair two days in a row does not give them time to fully dry out. I now alternate between two pairs of everyday shoes. The 24-hour gap between wears makes a noticeable difference.

📋 Quick Summary: Sprinkle a tablespoon of baking soda in each shoe, shake to distribute, leave overnight (8+ hours), shake out in the morning. For severe cases, repeat 2-3 nights or remove and treat the insoles separately. Rotate shoes daily to prevent odor returning.
