I bought a set of reusable produce bags from a brand I saw on Instagram. They were cute — organic cotton, drawstring closure, little tags that said “I am saving the planet.” The first time I put four apples in one, the seam split open in the middle of the produce aisle. Apples rolled under the onion display. I spent five minutes on my hands and knees retrieving them while a stock clerk watched.

After that humiliation, I did actual research. Here is what holds up and what falls apart.

Mesh Polyester — The Workhorse

Cotton bags look nice but are bulky, absorb moisture from wet produce, and the seams give out after a few months of heavy use. Mesh polyester bags are what you want. They are lightweight — the cashier can read the produce stickers right through them, so you do not have to dig everything out at checkout. They dry fast. They do not mildew. And the double-stitched seams on the good ones can hold eight pounds of citrus without ripping.

The brand that has held up best for me is Simple Ecology — their mesh bags come in a six-pack with three sizes, the largest big enough for a head of cauliflower. After two years of weekly use, none of mine have torn.

What to Avoid

Skip bags with metal toggle closures. The metal rusts when you wash the bags, and the toggle eventually snags on the mesh. Look for plastic cord locks instead. Also avoid bags that do not list the tare weight on the tag — the cashier needs that weight to subtract from your total so you are not paying for the bag.

The Tare Weight Trick

Good reusable produce bags print their weight directly on the tag in grams. If a bag does not have this, weigh it yourself at home on a kitchen scale and write the weight on the tag with a permanent marker. Hand the cashier one bag at a time with the tag visible. Most cashiers are happy to deduct the tare weight if they can see it.

Care and Washing

Turn the bags inside out and shake out any dirt or seeds. Machine wash in cold water inside a delicates bag, then air dry. Do not put them in the dryer — the heat shrinks polyester mesh. I wash mine once a month and they look almost new.
