The Bug Spray Trick That Keeps Mosquitoes Off Your Patio

I gave up on my patio for two summers because the mosquitoes owned it. Every evening I would go out with a citronella candle and come back in covered in bites anyway. The candle was doing almost nothing.

What actually worked was not one trick. It was a small system, and now my evenings outside are actually pleasant.

Remove the Breeding Grounds

Mosquitoes breed in standing water. A bottle cap full of water is enough for them. Walk your yard and dump everything: plant saucers, kids toys, gutters, the lid of the grill, anything that holds water after a rain. This did more for my yard than any spray ever did.

Kill the Adults Before You Sit Down

About thirty minutes before you want to be outside, spray the plants and shady areas around the patio with a yard spray. Let it settle. You are not spraying the seating area, you are hitting the bushes and corners where they hide during the day.

I spray the underside of leaves, where they actually rest, not the top.

Dress for the Evening

Mosquitoes are most active at dusk. Long sleeves and long pants in light colors make a real difference. Dark clothes attract them more. I wear a light hoodie on summer evenings and my bite count dropped to almost zero.

Other things that helped:

  • A box fan pointed across the eating area, mosquitoes cannot fly in moving air
  • Citronella candles placed on the ground, not on the table, so the smoke drifts at leg level
  • Repelling spray on ankles and wrists, the two spots they always find

The standing water sweep is the one people skip, and it is the one that matters most. No breeding grounds, no new mosquitoes.

📋 Quick Summary: Dump standing water, spray the shady edges before dusk, and use a fan and light clothing to reclaim your patio.
