My Shoulders Were Lobster Red After the Beach — These Four Kitchen Items Saved Me
I reapplied sunscreen. I swear I did. But the water at the beach was perfect and I stayed in for three hours and by the time I got home my shoulders were the color of a cooked lobster. The kind of burn where even a T-shirt feels like sandpaper and you cannot sleep because every position hurts.
No aloe vera gel in the house. The drugstore was twenty minutes away and I was not putting a shirt back on. But my kitchen had four things that worked.

Plain Yogurt
Full-fat plain yogurt, cold from the fridge. Spread it directly on the burn like a mask. The cold takes the heat out instantly. The fat and probiotics soothe the inflammation. Leave it on for fifteen minutes, then rinse with cool water. It looks ridiculous but the relief is immediate and real.
Do not use flavored yogurt. Strawberry chunks on a sunburn is a new problem, not a solution.
Black Tea Compress
Brew two black tea bags in a cup of boiling water. Let it cool completely. Soak a clean washcloth in the tea and lay it on the burned skin. The tannins in black tea reduce inflammation and draw heat out of the skin. This was the most effective thing I tried that day. The tea compress stayed cool longer than the yogurt and I did not have to rinse anything off afterward.
Cucumber Slices
Slice a cold cucumber thin. Lay the slices on the burn. They stick by themselves if your skin is warm enough — which, if you are sunburned, it is. Cucumber is mostly water and it lowers the skin surface temperature fast. Replace the slices when they warm up. This was less effective than the tea but required zero prep.
Oatmeal Bath
If the burn covers a lot of skin — back, legs, chest — fill a bathtub with cool water and pour in a cup of plain oatmeal. Blend it dry first into a powder if you want it to dissolve better. Soak for fifteen minutes. Oatmeal forms a protective film on the skin that stops the stinging.
I used the tea compress and yogurt on my shoulders, took an oatmeal bath, and was able to sleep that night without a wet towel on my back. The next morning the burn had calmed from angry red to a tolerable pink.
Quick Summary: Cold plain yogurt mask for 15 minutes. Cool black tea compress (tannins reduce inflammation). Cucumber slices for spot cooling. Oatmeal bath for widespread burns. All in your kitchen right now.
