Hang Heavy Items on Drywall Without Finding a Stud Every Single Time
I once hung a big mirror with regular nails straight into drywall. It held for about a week, then ripped out and nearly landed on my foot. The drywall was fine; my choice of hardware was the problem.
Why drywall alone cannot hold weight
Drywall is soft gypsum. A plain nail or screw has almost nothing to grip. Studs are the strongest option, but they are rarely exactly where you want your picture.
The right hardware for no-stud spots
- For light items, use plastic expansion anchors.
- For medium weight, use self-drilling drywall anchors.
- For heavy mirrors and shelves, use toggle bolts or snap-toggle anchors.
A toggle bolt opens up behind the wall and spreads the weight over a wide area. That is what finally held my mirror, and it has not moved since.
How to pick
Check the weight rating on the box and do not fudge it. I used to grab whatever anchor was in the junk drawer, and that is how I ended up patching holes.
If you can find a stud, always use it. But when you cannot, the right anchor makes drywall hold far more than you would think.
