The 60-Second Phone Cleanup That Feels Like a New Device
My phone was crawling. Apps took three seconds to open. The keyboard lagged when I typed. I was convinced I needed a new phone — this one was three years old, surely it was just dying of old age. Then a friend grabbed it, did four things in under a minute, and handed it back. It felt noticeably faster. Not placebo. Real improvement. I had been living with a slow phone because I did not know these four things existed.

One: Clear the Safari or Chrome Cache
Your browser stores website data so pages load faster next time. Over months, this cache can balloon to hundreds of megabytes or even a gigabyte. A bloated cache slows down every page load.
On iPhone: Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. On Android Chrome: three-dot menu > History > Clear browsing data > Cached images and files. This does not delete your bookmarks or saved passwords — just the temporary files.
I had over 800 MB of cached data when I cleared mine. That is half a gigabyte of junk my phone was lugging around on every web request.
Two: Offload Unused Apps
iPhone has a feature buried in Settings that removes the app but keeps its data. It is called Offload Unused Apps. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Look for the “Offload Unused Apps” option. Enable it. The phone will automatically remove apps you have not used in a while while preserving their documents and settings. When you re-download the app, everything is where you left it.
Android does not have an exact equivalent, but you can go to Settings > Apps, sort by “Last used,” and uninstall anything you have not opened in three months.
Three: Reduce Motion
Those smooth animations when you open and close apps? They look nice. They also consume processing power and add a fraction of a second to every transition. Turning them off makes your phone feel snappier immediately.
iPhone: Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion (toggle on). Android: Settings > Accessibility > Remove animations (or, in Developer Options, set Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale to “off” or “0.5x”).
This one change made my phone feel brand new. Apps open instantly. No more waiting for that swooping animation to finish before I can tap something.
Four: Restart the Phone
Not sleep mode. Not screen-off. Full restart. Power off, wait thirty seconds, power on. This clears RAM, kills background processes that have memory leaks, and resets network connections. It is the tech equivalent of a good night’s sleep.
I now restart my phone once a week. Takes a minute. Solves problems I did not even know I had.
📋 Quick Summary: Make an old phone feel new in 60 seconds: clear browser cache, enable “Offload Unused Apps” (iPhone) or uninstall unused apps (Android), turn on Reduce Motion in Accessibility settings, and restart the phone completely. Four steps, zero dollars, dramatic speed improvement.
