The Toaster Oven Hack That Reheats Pizza Better Than a Microwave
I almost threw out my toaster oven three years ago. It was taking up counter space, and I used it maybe twice a month for bagels. Then my neighbor Jen—who worked in a pizza joint through college—saw me nuking a slice in the microwave and physically cringed.
“You own a toaster oven,” she said. “Why are you doing that to yourself?”
She walked me through her method, and I have not microwaved leftover pizza since. Not once.

Why Microwaves Ruin Pizza
Microwaves heat by vibrating water molecules. Pizza crust has very little water—it is mostly starch and fat. So the microwave overheats the sauce and cheese (which have water) while the crust stays cold and turns into a damp sponge. You get hot toppings on soggy bread. It tastes like regret.
A toaster oven works differently. It uses dry radiant heat from above and below, the same way a pizza oven does. The crust crisps back up. The cheese re-melts instead of turning into rubber.
The Method That Actually Works
Preheat to 350°F. Do not skip this. If you put pizza in a cold toaster oven, the bottom never gets hot enough before the top burns.
Use the tray, not foil. Foil traps steam underneath. You want air circulating under the crust. The perforated tray that came with your toaster oven is perfect. If you lost it, a cooling rack set on the tray works too.
Place the slice directly on the rack if you can. I put mine right on the middle rack with a piece of foil on the tray below to catch drips. Total pizza-oven simulation.
Five to seven minutes. That is it. You want the cheese bubbling at the edges. If the crust is thick, give it eight. Watch it the first couple times so you learn your particular oven’s sweet spot.
What About the Stovetop Method?
Some people swear by a skillet with a lid. I tried it. It works—the lid traps steam and melts the cheese while the dry pan crisps the bottom. But it requires hovering. You cannot walk away or the bottom burns. A toaster oven is set-and-forget. I go check email and come back to perfect pizza.
The Air Fryer Is Even Faster
If you own an air fryer, same principle but faster: 320°F, three to four minutes, slice directly in the basket. The crust comes out almost better than fresh. The air fryer is basically a tiny convection oven, which is what commercial pizza ovens are. I still use the toaster oven because it fits two slices side by side.
One Thing I Got Wrong
I used to throw cold pizza straight in. Then the cheese would burn before the middle was warm. Now I let the slice sit on the counter while the oven preheats. Ten minutes out of the fridge makes a difference. Room-temperature pizza reheats evenly.
I also learned not to use “toast” mode. That setting only heats from the top and is way too aggressive. Use “bake” or the default setting.
📋 Quick Summary: Preheat your toaster oven to 350°F, place pizza directly on the rack with foil underneath to catch drips, and bake for 5-7 minutes. Crispy crust, melty cheese, no microwave sogginess.
