Replacing a light switch is one of those jobs that sounds scary but takes ten minutes once you know the order. I put it off for a year because I was nervous, then finally did it and wondered why I had waited so long.

Turn off the power, for real

This is the only part you cannot skip. Flip the breaker for that room to off, then flip the switch a few times to confirm the light stays dark. If you have a voltage tester, use it to double check before you touch any wire.

The swap, step by step

1. Unscrew the cover plate and pull the switch out gently.
2. Take a photo of the wires before you disconnect anything.
3. Loosen the screws and free the old switch.
4. Connect the new switch the same way the old one was wired.
5. Screw it back in and replace the plate.

A basic single pole switch has two screws and a ground. Keep the wire nuts snug and make sure no bare copper is exposed. If the wires look old, brittle, or there are more than two of them, that is the signal to call an electrician instead.

Flip the breaker back on and test it. The sense of accomplishment is wildly out of proportion to how easy the job actually is.
