Why does one entryway stay clear while another turns into a landfill by Wednesday every week? A neighbor of mine has four kids, a dog, and a table that is never buried. So I asked her what she does.

Her answer was less about the table and more about the rule she put on it.

Every item needs a destination, not a spot

A pile forms when something lands on the table and has nowhere else to go. Keys do not pile up if there is a hook. Bills do not pile up if there is a tray that gets emptied Sunday. The pile is not the problem. The missing destination is.

I counted what actually landed on my table for a week: keys, mail, my kid’s school papers, sunglasses, a reusable bag, and loose change. Six things. That meant six destinations.

The reset

1. Empty the table completely. Every item goes into one of three piles: put away, throw out, deal with.
2. Install a row of hooks on the wall above the table for keys and bags. Hooks beat a bowl, because a bowl fills up.
3. Put one shallow tray on the table for mail only. Nothing else is allowed in it.
4. Add one small bin for the things that belong somewhere else in the house. It gets emptied every Sunday.
5. Set a rule: the table is cleared before bed. Not tidied. Cleared.

The tray is the piece that made it stick for me. Before, mail went anywhere. Now if the tray is full, it is a signal that I have not dealt with mail in six days.

What I got wrong first

• I bought a bigger table. More surface just meant more pile. Smaller was better.
• I put the hook too high for my kid to reach. If the whole household cannot use it without help, it does not work.
• I skipped the Sunday emptying for the first three weeks and the bin became a second pile.

One last thing Karen told me that I did not expect: she keeps a small trash can with a lid right by the door. Junk mail and receipts go straight in without a detour through the table. Half of what used to pile up now never touches the surface at all.
