Every home has one: the drawer where pens, batteries, old keys, and three loose screws go to live together. Mine got so bad that I once spent ten minutes looking for a tape measure I knew was in there. When I finally did the job right, it took one afternoon and I have not had a junk drawer since.

The secret is not buying fancy organizers. It is dumping everything out first.

Dump It All on the Floor

Pull the whole drawer out and turn it over. Every single thing goes on a table. No sorting as you go, just dump.

Now wipe the drawer itself clean. You will find crumbs, dust, and probably a few things you forgot existed.

Sort Into Three Piles

1. Keep: things you actually use or need close at hand
2. Relocate: items that belong somewhere else in the house
3. Trash: broken pens, dead batteries, mystery screws

The relocate pile is the sneaky one. Batteries belong in a battery drawer or a labeled box. Stamps belong near where you sort mail. Return them to their real homes instead of letting the junk drawer hoard them.

Give Everything a Spot

Use a cheap divided tray or small containers to group things: one section for writing tools, one for small tools, one for tape and adhesives. Dollar store organizers work fine, no need for custom inserts.

Label the sections if you want, or just keep the groups consistent. I keep mine simple: pens, tools, tape, and misc. It takes two seconds to find anything now.
