New Year Home Reset — Declutter Every Room in a Weekend

The week between Christmas and New Year’s, my house looks like a shipping warehouse. Boxes, wrapping paper, new things with no home, old things displaced by new things. I used to spend January slowly chipping away at the chaos. Now I do one intense weekend and start the year with a clean house. The system is aggressive but it works.

Friday Night: The Purge Bags

Get three large bags or boxes. Label them: Donate, Trash, and Belongs Elsewhere. Walk through every room and fill them. Do not organize. Do not deep clean. Just collect everything that does not belong in each room. This takes about two hours for a whole house and the visual difference is immediate.

Saturday: Room by Room

One hour per room. Set a timer. The time pressure prevents perfectionism — you cannot spend twenty minutes deciding whether to keep a candle. Touch every surface. Wipe it. Put back only what belongs there. The Belongs Elsewhere bag from Friday gets emptied into the right rooms. Anything still in the Donate bag at the end of Saturday goes in the car.

Sunday Morning: The Hard Decisions

Kitchen gadgets you have not used in a year. Clothes that do not fit. Books you will not re-read. Electronics with missing chargers. This is the emotional part. My rule: if I had to pay to move it to a new house, would I? If the answer is no, it leaves. I donated three boxes of kitchen items last year and six months later I cannot name a single thing from those boxes.

Sunday Afternoon: Reset and Celebrate

Vacuum everything. Open the windows for ten minutes even if it is cold — fresh air changes the energy of a cleaned house. Light a candle. Order pizza because you have been cleaning all weekend and cooking is not happening. Walk through each room once more and notice how it feels. Starting the year in a clean home changes your mental state more than any resolution.

📋 Quick Summary: Friday: three-bag purge. Saturday: one hour per room with timer. Sunday: hard decisions on unused items. End with fresh air and takeout. Start the year clean.
