Natural Ways to Keep Mosquitoes Away That Actually Work

I get eaten alive every summer. Mosquitoes love me — probably because I run warm and breathe heavily, both mosquito attractants. I have tried citronella candles (barely work), those ultrasonic repellent devices (do not work at all, science has proven it), and even a bug zapper (killed moths, not mosquitoes).

Here is what actually made a difference.

Eliminate Standing Water (No, Really)

Every article about mosquitoes says this. There is a reason. Mosquitoes breed in standing water — any standing water, even a bottle cap. Walk your property and dump everything: clogged gutters, pot saucers, bird baths (change water every three days), kids’ toys, that bucket behind the shed you forgot about. A mosquito can complete its entire life cycle from egg to adult in a tablespoon of water in about a week.

I found a forgotten planter tray behind my grill that had become a mosquito nursery. Dumped it and the bites dropped noticeably within days.

Fans Over Sprays

Mosquitoes are weak fliers. A simple box fan or oscillating fan on your patio creates enough wind to keep them away from your seating area. They literally cannot fly against a 2 mph breeze. This costs nothing in chemicals, does not smell, and actually makes you cooler at the same time. I run a cheap $20 box fan on low when I eat outside and the difference in bites is night and day.

What About Plants?

Citronella plants, lavender, and marigolds do repel mosquitoes — but only if you crush the leaves and rub them on your skin. Just having the plants nearby does very little. The oil needs to be released. I grow lemon balm and rub a few leaves on my arms before sitting outside. It works about as well as a weak DEET spray and smells nice.

I still get the occasional bite. But going from fifteen bites per evening to one or two? That is a win.

📋 Quick Summary: Dump all standing water (bottle caps count). Use a box fan outdoors to create a wind barrier. Crush citronella leaves for skin application. Skip ultrasonic devices — they are proven ineffective.
