Keep Guacamole Green for Days with the Lime Wedge Method

The Super Bowl Lesson

My buddy handed me a lime wedge at his Super Bowl party and told me to press it into the guacamole before I put the lid on. I thought he was being weird about presentation. Turns out he was saving the dip.

Browning happens because oxygen reaches the avocado. The lime wedge method blocks the air where the dip touches the lid, and the juice helps too. I have kept a bowl green for three days using this trick.

How the Lime Wedge Method Works

Make your guacamole, then do this:

  1. Squeeze one lime wedge over the top and spread the juice around
  2. Press the wedge itself into the center of the dip, flesh side down
  3. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing it flat against the surface
  4. Put the lid on and refrigerate

The wedge sits in the middle like a little guardian, and the plastic wrap does the real sealing. No air pocket means no gray layer on top.

Other Tricks That Work

If you are out of limes, a thin layer of water works too. Sounds wrong, I know. Pour a quarter inch over the top, seal it, and pour it off before serving. The dip underneath stays bright.

Keep the pits in the bowl as well. Avocado pits reduce the surface area that oxygen can reach, and they double as a visual reminder to seal the container.

One warning: the lime wedge trick works best on guacamole you plan to serve within a few days. If you need it to last a week, freeze it in an airtight container instead. The texture changes a little, but the color survives.

📋 Quick Summary: Press a lime wedge into the guacamole, cover with plastic wrap flush against the surface, and keep the pits in the bowl. No air means no browning.
