You know the feeling. The water stops draining, the sink fills up, and your first instinct is to grab the bottle of chemical stuff from under the cabinet. I have been there too. Then I read the fine print on that bottle and started looking for a gentler route. Turns out the gentle route works, and it works fast.

The baking soda and vinegar method

This is not a myth. It works for the everyday clogs that come from food scraps and grease. Here is the order that actually gets results:

1. Remove standing water with a cup or a turkey baster.
2. Pour half a cup of baking soda straight down the drain.
3. Follow it with half a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain with a plug or a wet cloth right away, the fizz helps push things through.
4. Wait fifteen minutes, then flush with boiling water.

If the water drains after that, you are done. If it drains slowly, repeat once. If it is still stuck, move on to the plunger before you call anyone.

When you need a plunger

Fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger cup, then work it in short, firm pushes. The trick is to keep a wet cloth over the overflow hole so the pressure goes down the pipe instead of out the top. Ten good pushes is usually enough for a stubborn kitchen clog.

What I stopped doing

I used to pour boiling water down a PVC drain and call it a day. Then my first landlord explained that very hot water can soften PVC joints if the pipes are old. Now I only use hot tap water for the flush, not boiling, unless I know the pipes are metal. Also, I stopped dumping coffee grounds and cooking oil down the sink. That one change cut my clog count from every few weeks to maybe twice a year.

If the drain still will not move after soda, vinegar, and a plunger, the clog is probably deep or there is a bigger issue. That is the point where a plumber stops being optional. But for the normal stuff, the kitchen cabinet chemicals can stay in the cabinet.
