I bought a nice patio set three years ago and treated it like it was indestructible. The label said all weather, so I left it out through two winters. By the second spring, the cushions looked like they had been through a war and the metal frame had rust spots in places I did not know metal could rust. I learned the hard way that all weather does not mean all seasons.

Clean everything before it goes away

Do not store dirty furniture. Bird droppings, pollen, and sap sit on the surface all winter and eat into the finish. I spend an hour each fall washing the frames with soapy water, scrubbing the cushions with a mild cleaner, and letting everything dry completely in the sun. Storing anything damp is how mold starts.

The cushion decision

Cushions are the most fragile part, and they decide how much work you have:

• Best: bring cushions inside. A closet, the basement, or even large trash bags in the garage. They last twice as long.
• Good: store them upright in a dry shed or covered area, never flat on concrete, which holds moisture.
• Risky: leave them out under a cover. If you must, stack them so water cannot pool and use a breathable cover, not plastic, which traps condensation.

Frames need help too

Metal frames get a coat of automotive wax before storage, which adds a barrier against moisture. I touch up any rust spots with a little sanding and rust paint first. Wood frames get a quick sand and a coat of outdoor sealer if the finish is wearing. Tighten every bolt and screw while the furniture is out, because a loose joint flexes all winter and gets worse.

Cover smart, not just covered

If you use covers, buy the breathable kind and strap them tight so wind cannot flap them. Flapping covers rub against the frame and wear through the finish. My new rule is simple: if it takes more than twenty minutes to put the patio away in October, I am doing something wrong. Two hours of fall prep has saved me from replacing a whole set.
