How to Silence a Knocking Pipe Behind Your Wall Without Opening It

What That Knocking Actually Is
The sound has a name: water hammer. It happens when water flowing at high speed through a pipe suddenly stops — like when a washing machine valve or dishwasher solenoid slams shut. The water has momentum. When it crashes to a stop, the shockwave slams the pipe against the framing inside the wall. That is the knocking.
Over time, water hammer loosens pipe connections, wears out valves, and can eventually cause a leak inside the wall. It is not just annoying — it is doing damage.
The $15 Fix: Water Hammer Arrestor
A water hammer arrestor is a small device that screws onto the water supply valve behind your appliance. Inside it is a piston and an air chamber. When the water slams to a stop, the piston compresses the air — absorbing the shock wave before it reaches the pipes in the wall.
- Identify which appliance causes the knock. In my case, it was the washing machine. Turn each appliance on and off one at a time and listen.
- Turn off the water supply to that appliance. There should be a shut-off valve on the wall behind it.
- Screw the arrestor onto the valve — between the valve and the supply hose. Hand-tighten, then give it a quarter turn with pliers. Do not overtighten.
- Reconnect the supply hose to the other end of the arrestor.
- Turn the water back on and run the appliance. The knock should be gone.
If you have knocking at multiple fixtures — say the dishwasher and a bathroom sink — you can install arrestors at each one. They are small enough to fit behind most appliances without moving anything.
When the Arrestor Is Not Enough
If the knocking happens throughout the house and not just at one appliance, the problem might be high water pressure. You can buy a pressure gauge that screws onto an outdoor spigot for about $10. Residential pressure should be between 40 and 60 psi. Above 80 psi, you need a pressure reducing valve at the main water line — that one does require a plumber.
But for the single-appliance knock? The $15 arrestor does the job.
