My dog’s vet bill last year made me do a double take. I love the guy, but between the checkup, the shots, and the flea stuff, it added up fast. I started looking for ways to cut the cost without cutting the care, and most of them were simpler than I expected.

The biggest pet expense mistake is skipping routine care, because a small problem caught early costs a fraction of a big problem caught late.

What actually saves money

• Preventive care. Regular checkups catch issues early. A $60 exam beats a $1,000 surgery every time.
• Ask your vet for the generic. Prescription meds for pets often have cheaper generic versions. Ask, because vets rarely volunteer it.
• Compare pharmacy prices. Your vet’s in-house pharmacy is not always the cheapest. Ask for a written prescription and price it online.
• Buy food in bulk when it is on sale, and stick to the food your vet recommends. Cheap food that causes problems costs more in the end.

Pet insurance: worth it or not

Insurance makes sense if you cannot cover a big emergency bill. Read the fine print on exclusions and deductibles before you sign. For routine care, insurance often does not pay off, so a savings account for pet emergencies can work just as well.

My routine

I set aside a small amount every month into a pet fund. The yearly checkup and shots come out of that, and the fund absorbs surprises without me panicking. I also switched my dog to the generic version of his allergy medicine, and it cut the cost by about a third.

Do not skip these

Some things are not worth saving on: rabies shots, heartworm prevention, and dental cleanings. Heartworm treatment is expensive and painful, and prevention is cheap. Dental disease is one of the most common pet problems, and it is far cheaper to prevent than to treat.

Free and cheap extras

Check your local shelter or community center for low-cost vaccine clinics. Many areas run vaccination events for a fraction of the vet office price. Call your local shelter and ask, you might be surprised.

My dog gets the same care as before. I just stopped overpaying for it.
