Every December, my gift wrap situation was chaos. Rolls in one corner, tape in a drawer, scissors in the kitchen, ribbons wrapped around themselves like a nest. Wrapping one gift meant a house-wide treasure hunt. Last year I fixed it with one box, and gift wrapping finally takes minutes, not an afternoon.

The whole system is one large box with everything in it. If it does not fit, you do not need it.

What goes in

• Rolls of wrapping paper, standing upright or laid flat, however they fit best.
• Scissors and tape, together so you never hunt for them.
• Ribbons and bows, in a small container inside the box.
• Tags, pens, and a ruler if you use one.
• A roll of tissue paper for quick fill.

How to set it up

1. Pick a box big enough for the longest rolls you have. A plastic bin with a lid works best.
2. Put the rolls in first, standing in one corner.
3. Add a small container for ribbons, bows, and tags, so the small stuff does not scatter.
4. Tape the scissors and tape to the inside of the lid or keep them in a pocket, so they are the first thing you see.
5. Keep it in one spot, near where you wrap gifts.

My mistake

I tried to organize everything into separate little bins, which meant eight containers in three rooms. One box is the rule. When everything lives together, wrapping is a one-stop trip instead of a scavenger hunt.

The bonus

An organized wrap box means I can wrap a gift the day I buy it, instead of piling gifts up for one stressful wrapping night. It also stops me from buying duplicate tape and scissors, because I can see what I have.

Keep it updated

Once a year, use up or pass on the paper you are tired of. A box you actually open beats a collection you avoid.

My gift wrapping went from a yearly dread to a ten-minute job. The box lives in the closet, ready for whenever.
